Utah Agricultural College Women's Club records

 Collection
Identifier: USU_23.18/1

Scope and Contents

This collection contains the records detailing the activity of the Agricultural College Women's club. Its title was later shortened to AC Women's club when the college became Utah State University. Materials include yearbooks, correspondence, event flyers, some financial records, photographs, and meeting minutes in record books. The early record books (1902-1990's) had handwritten meeting minutes but in the later years the record books functioned more like scrapbooks. A memoir book compiled in 1962 reviews the club's history from its founding in 1902. Also included are several DVDs with anniversary programs from 2006 and 2011, and a file of obituaries, funeral programs, and tributes of former club members. Missing from the meeting minutes are years 1911-1916 and 1955-1960.

Biographical / Historical

In 1902, fourteen women met to create a literary club. Initially, the club was comprised of 25 wives of Utah Agricultural College faculty, but grew to include single women and women of the local community. The first year of study was focused on Grecian History, with the women taking turns hosting, leading a discussion, or inviting a guest speaker. Topics for study ranged from art, music, theater, architecture, history, and literature to domestic skills, personal growth, and community improvement. While scholarly pursuits and community service remained the focus of the twice-monthly meetings, the women formed deep bonds that often lasted for the remainder of their lives. The original members were listed only by their surnames: Kerr, Caine, Gowans, Merrill, Swendsen, Snow, Robinson, Engle, Wright, Yoder, Riter, Fleming, McAlister, and Faris.
